Willey Cricket Club is proud to announce 2 new major sponsorship deals so far for 2018 season.
Walsall based Central Access Hire and Sales Ltd have taken the opportunity to be our main shirt sponsor for the coming season and will now have their logo on the chest of every playing member during every home and away league match this season
The Half Moon Inn, Jackfield have also joined the family this year! This beautiful pub on the banks of the Severn have recently hosted our annual presentation evening with huge success and now we have forged our relationship to new levels. We are all very excited for this union and cannot wait to sit in the sun after matches at this lovely venue.
Nets have been going well with a large attendance for the first 2 weeks. We’ve been able to run 3 nets both weeks so far with everyone getting a good workout and knocking the rust off and a few new faces to boot.
Sessions are held at Much Wenlock Sports Centre Thursday nights at 8.30-10pm until the start of the season so see you there!
The club is very sad to announce the passing of long serving member Tony ‘Griff’ Griffiths on Thursday 15th March 2018
Tony was a stalwart part of the family who dedicated 40 years of his life to Willey as a player, committee member and a groundsman. Tony was an enthusiastic teammate and over came much adversity in life to become a solid batsman, wicked spin bowler and a wall in the backward gully position. He held the second team captaincy in the mid 90’s, the position of club trustee for 16 years and was a larger than life character on match days . He will be sorely missed by all at Willey Cricket Club and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
Its back!!….Cash for your Community has hit the shelves again and Willey are after a bite of the cherry! Last year saw us receive £1000 for our efforts and we’d like to at least be in the same boat again this year especially with large ground modifications on the way late summer.
If you could collect any tokens and save them for us we’d be massively grateful. You can donate them to Alan Rudd, any club member or any of our collection points (Broseley news, E Davis and sons and Downes)
Firstly, I would like to convey the club’s sincerest apologies for the lack of communication in the past few months. There have been a number of changes in personnel but that does not excuse us from keeping you all informed. I hope to make sure that this doesn’t happen again and you are all well and truly up to speed with all goings on at the club in 2018.
This year the club made a change to the constitution to hold our AGM in November of each year, giving the new committee time over the winter to prepare for the coming season. There were several changes to the committee; Jonathan Duppa was elected as Chairman, with Ian Slater re-elected as Vice-Chairman and Club Development Officer. Tim Bellett was elected as Secretary. Stuart Sheperd continues as Treasurer.
With regards to the playing side, Nathan Garbett was re-elected as 1st XI Captain with Lindsey Rudd once again his Vice Captain and Jonathan Duppa was re-elected to 2nd XI Captain, again with Simon McCutcheon as his Vice. Kieron Hatton was elected as Sunday XI Captain and Shane Hatton was elected as Sunday XI Vice Captain as Chris Rudd steps down after many much appreciated years at the helm.
I’m sure you will all join me in wishing the teams the best of luck for the 2018 season.
At the end of October the club held its annual presentation evening for the first time at the Half Moon in Jackfield. A great night was had by all and a special thanks to the team at The Half Moon for the wonderful evening they provided.
Ryan Ball very deservedly won Young Player of the Year. As you can see from the photo he was very happy to receive the award and we hope that Ryan will continue to flourish along with our other youngsters in order to create a sound future for the club.
Looking forward to 2018, there are a lot of things happening up at Barrow Park. The club is now trying to raise £10,000 in order to have the outfield levelled and attempt to eradicate the moles that have made our ground their home. As you can imagine, £10,000 is a huge amount of money so the club will be fundraising throughout the year so apologies now for the bombardment of updates you will receive! We are hoping to start this process at the end of August, meaning we will have to find a new home for the remainder of our games in the season.
I would like to invite you all to the ground throughout the 2018 season as this will be the last time you can see Barrow Park as it is now. Whilst you are there our wonderful Ladies Committee will try and ply you with cups of tea and sandwiches whilst you reminisce with old friends, and enjoy the odd over or two watching our teams play.
Both the 1st and 2nd teams had very good seasons last year and will be competing in the same divisions again in 2018, with the 1st XI in Division 2 and the 2nd XI in Division 2 2nd XI. 2018 sees the first team going up against the likes of Lilleshall, Montgomery, Bishops Castle, Ludlow 3rds and many more. The 2nd XI will face teams including Madeley 2nds, Cound 2nds, Acton Reynald 2nds and of course the local derby with Broseley 2nds.
Following on from the award winning success of 2017 where the club won ‘All Stars Club of the Year’, the All Stars initiative with Barrow School is set to continue, with Ian Slater taking the reins once more. The award is testimony to the time and hard work Ian and Barrow school put into the initiative throughout the summer.
Again we are hoping to link our All Stars into our Junior coaching sessions that are held on Sunday mornings by our coaching team consisting of Lee Jones, Ian Slater and Shane Hatton.
As you can see, there is lots going on at the club and I hope to see some of you in the new season enjoying the sport we all love at the club we call home. With that in mind may I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
W.W.C.C Annual General Meeting will take place on Friday Nov 24th at Broseley Social Club starting at 7.30pm.
After a fantastic 2017 season, the club is eager to build on the success and indeed make changes to improve the club with some major investments so we have a lot to discuss, not least the election of officers for 2018 to steer us into the future. We have multiple roles up for new blood and existing officers intending to stand for re-election so it’s time to have your say!!
All Members are URGED to attend and friends and potential new additions to the family are very welcome.
We look forward to seeing a good turnout and catching up with friends!
Willey are proud to unveil their new covers bearing the name of new sponsor GoGlobal. The covers are a dramatic and much needed upgrade on the archaic old steel set, boasting lightweight aluminium frames and tarpaulin coverings making them easy to use on match days and simple for the ground staff to move. The covers were this seasons major ground project following the new roller and drainage of previous years making Barrow Park an even more impressive place to play cricket! The funds for the covers were raised through hard work and fundraising from the membership and help from our sponsors, with GoGlobal being the primary sponsor for this project.
GoGlobal are Industry leaders in global logistics, at the forefront of worldwide agricultural freight movement and Willey Wanderers are both thankful and proud of their support both now and hopefully for years to come.
