Welcome to the 2016 season!
As many of you may be aware we experienced a break-in during the beginning of the year and our square mowers were stolen – apparently we were not the only clubs in the area – the thieves seemed to be targeting village clubs where the grounds were a little remote – it was bitterly disappointing to the club as we had reached the point where we were happy with the equipment we had accumulated and felt the club was in a very happy position. We were lucky in as much as the equipment was insured but we still had to try and find suitable replacements, and quickly, as the season was fast approaching – to date we have managed to replace one of the square mowers and are actively searching for another. Needless to say the members have worked hard on the ground and were able to have all the preparation in place before the start of the season.
Work is continuing on improving the ground and there will be a work party on Sunday to carry on the good work – we are lucky that as a club we have members who are prepared to give of their time to maintain and improve the facilities at the club – and it certainly pays off as this year we will be hosting two junior county matches and don’t forget the Chairman’s fixture
The season is still in its early stages and it has been an up and down start but hopefully the boys can produce the same results or better than last season. In true Willey fashion the first team abandoned a match (whilst in a winning position) due to an injury sustained by a member of the opposing team (thankfully after a night in hospital the player concerned was declared fit)
We held our AGM in February and as a result we have appointed new members to the committee. Following the resignation of Martin Ball and Jonathan Duppa as joint vice Chairman, Lindsey Rudd has been appointed acting vice Chairman, we have a new Hon Secretary, Craig Jones (but I will still be producing the clubs newsletters) and as you can see from the enclosed fixture card new Saturday 1st and 2nd team vice captains and Jack Thomas has joined Chris Rudd and Graham Ball as joint Sunday captain. We are also pleased to welcome Glenn Edwards back to the club who is proving to be a great asset – we also welcome Richard Turley-Salmons and his family who have already had a massive impact both on and off the pitch, and Craig Long has returned to the club after a 12 month sabbatical.
On a sadder note Richard (Tager) Rhodes, one of our long serving Vice Presidents passed away recently but the club will still maintain its links with Richard’s family through his grandson, Tim Bellett, who is Saturday 2nd team Vice Captain.
Well that’s all for now only to once again extend an invitation to all Vice Presidents to pop up to the ground whenever they can and also whilst writing to thank the Broseley Fish Bar who have kindly donated pizzas for our Saturday matches – much appreciated by the lads as you can imagine!
