Well here we are at the end of another season, with mixed results for our league teams – the First Eleven took it right down to the wire in their battle against relegation eventually ending up 9th in Division Two with the Second Eleven in contention for promotion falling away right at the death to finish fourth in Reserve Division Two – the highlight of the season for the club was winning the Shropshire Cricket League Junior Bash competition. Another statistic WWCC can be proud off is that despite over 70 games being conceded during the season in the Shropshire League – mainly due to shortage of players – we were able to fulfil all of our games so we must be doing something right. We are also fortunate that we are one of the few local clubs that are able to field a Sunday team and quite a few of the opposition travel quite a distance to enjoy the more friendly environment of Sunday cricket and this season we were invited to play one of the teams who have been coming the Barrow Park for the best part of 10 years –Wincott Ramblers who are based on the Wirral and a fantastic day and evening was had by all
This year we set up a Junior coaching scheme with two of our players – Richard Turley-Salmons and Lee Jones providing the Sunday morning coaching expertise. We hope that we can expand this next season so if anyone knows of youngsters keen to get into cricket we shall be once again running the Sunday morning sessions in 2017
This year we once again held two Shropshire Cricket Board Junior matches both of which were a great success with the club receiving plaudits on the ground preparation, organisation and hospitality – with the promise that we would once again be considered to hold even more games in the future. On both occasions the weather was fantastic with a considerable number of parents coming along to support their children and enjoy what they considered the wonderful hidden secret of Barrow Park – all in all two very successful events
We have once again received great support from our Vice Presidents in the form of donations – plus Saturday pizzas kindly supplied by Broseley Fish Bar and the after game chips and bread and butter from the Duke of York both of which went down a treat as you can imagine – our resident ‘Percy Throwers’ Derek and Mary Rudd have kept the flower beds and hanging baskets looking a picture and James Hurdley has once again kindly provided plants for the scorebox flower bed – we would also like to thank Richard Gough for donating a small sit on mower which will be put to good use on the square and to Dave and Kay Roberts for the rough cut mower and chainsaw – all so gratefully received. We would also like to thank Ryan Garbett at Habitat Lettings for subsidising the team polo shirts for the Junior Bash Final with over twenty being proudly worn for the final at Wem Cricket Club. Thanks also to the Shropshire County Cricket League for their contribution to assist in replacement of mowers after the break-in earlier in the year.
We shall be holding our Annual Presentation Evening at the Lion Hotel, Broseley on October 22nd and we would love to see as many Vice Presidents as can attend – this is a lovely evening where we are able to celebrate the season just gone – so if anyone is interested in attending please contact Jo Ball on 07842246689
Well that’s all for now
